KC-135A Navigator and Boom Operator save Pilots.
There I was, in 1991, my first long Pacific Tanker Task Force PTTF Temporary Duty TDY overseas, as new KC-135A Copilot with roughly 250 flying hours under my belt. This sortie was initially a five(5) ship tanker Mito/ downgraded to Cell departure due to weather.
This was an approach at Andersen AFB to Rwy 06R, after completing the five(5) ship tanker cell inflight refuelings. A planned Aircraft Commander approach to a much desired touch and go into the traffic pattern. Lots of radio chatter, and Air Traffic Control ATC handling several aircraft with a delayed handoff to the tower controller on short final.
It really was a goat rope; usually, the ATC controllers transfer follow-on communications in a timely manner, but that didn’t occur this time.
I was ultimately task saturated (seat meat) due to the previous deviations around the weather, Aircraft Commander changing instrument approach procedures on the fly during final approach, cockpit interphone chatter, and poor ATC/ Tower handling of approach aircraft.
This profession is built, and has an imperative foundation, upon the informative critique. Aircraft Commander wasn’t fully in command of the aircraft, and everything that was rapidly developing/ snowballing within our aircraft.
In hindsight, both pilots had shortcomings, but the rest of the aircrew backed us up to operate safely within all regulations. Usually Tower would grant these request, but there was weather close to the field, plus they were recovering our tanker cell mates and probably didn’t want us playing in the patten.
I proceed on to accomplish an Individual Milestone 3,500+ Mishap-Free Flying Hours within my career.

F-16 A/R First 4-Ship 4 of 4

It is not easy for a receiver during aerial refueling. This receiver is involuntarily exploring the limits of the boom. Nice receiver cross-under toward end of clip. I am performing copilot duties distributing fuel onto two flight of four F-16's. It can get fast and furious at times with multiple receivers cycling in and out. We are #4 in this 5 Ship Tanker Cell. Fly Away Captain Burleson, Fly Away! RIP! 5/20/24
Thank you, Capt. for your service and R.I.P
Burl passed away yesterday. My condolences to his family.
❤❤❤ We ALL have a mission (or five) like that in our memories. Excellent crew coordination AND speaking up saves lives.
Captain Burleson was cleared for heavenly departure on 5/20/24. RIP!
Outstanding!❤
I Love this Anthony❤
Burl, do you remember what the call-signs were when we were at Wurtsmith?...... was it COHO for the 52's and HURON for the 135's?
So severely under-powered that it seems almost unbelievable.
So the idea is that you guys get away before an inbound strike? That makes sense, but what about all the people that get left behind? Do they scatter as well once you guys are out of there?
I was in 8th grade when this video was posted. That was 12 years ago to the exact day lol
This is Kadena
Love from Türkiye.. a wunderfull starting
How is the unit holding up now 😊
Compro 900.000.000 unidades para a força aéria brasileira
I like more the KC135E better engines
When I was in SAC at a KC-135 base. We were not allowed to have cameras on the flight line. To see the video inside of the cockpit. Weird has security changed?
lol i was a boom operator, i always wondered what that hole was for
I worked on the A's and the Q's.
I feel it like it was yesterday. I love water injections
Thank you again Nate for the sights and sounds of my old friend the KC-135
What memories! I was there in UPT '82-'83.
Regardless of the utility, it sure was fun!
bring back SAC! the combined threats from a united russia- china alliance against us has NEVER been greater!! super energized China on a war path!!
A 135A takeoff from Wake. I’ll bet that was a thrill.
Mx officer on A/Qs and pilot of R/Ts - that takeoff roll…soooo long and with water that was unreliable…. 😳
When pilots burned water! Flew the A model for about a year and a half. I don’t really missed that experience but it allowed me to really appreciate the R model (the F-135R😅). In thrust we trust!
I didn't recognize it as Kadena! I was stationed there with our Navy P-3 squadron.
I was a happy passenger on a Saturn Airlines charter flight on the way to Viet Nam when we made a refueling stop on Wake. I remember that cannon. That was 1968. That was in a Boeing 707. That plane landed at Bien Hoa and never shut down the engines. We got off it was reloaded and on the way out with guys headed home before we cleared the perimeter fence.
No one kicks ass without tanker gas. Thanks for the videos. Would flights have been EMCON under wartime conditions?
Tell us where the surfing is!
My dad was an aircraft commander in 1957 on KC-135A, before that he flew B-29, KC-29, and KC-97. He said he passed a lot of gas…lol! Sure miss him.
Wow, brings back memories! Flew out of Kadena many times in KC135q’s. Never had to do a MITO there, but we were normally two ship one minute spacing. At the school house at Castle, it was fun to train students in the a model at 12 second spacing and the r model at 15 second spacing. It was important training to ensure we could get our tankers off the ground in minimum time. I miss those days. Watching a squadron of planes takeoff during an ORI was to say the least impressive.
Look at that, the navigator has some sort of a digital clock clipped to the hood of the radar and NO watch. That's cringe worthy for some of us older navs.
My dad was a navigator in the Army Air Corp during WW2 Stationed in Brazil, they would bring troops and supplies over to northern Africa and return. He passed away in 2007. I have all his navigation books from the classes he gave back in 1955. I have his chronometer, a sextant of my own, an altimeter, his dead reckoning computer, and mercator map of the Gemini 7 Mission with all possible splashdown points.
@@robertpease5865 Can you post a picture of his chronometer here?
@@johnhebert3855 Later today. Falling asleep.

All over the world on Steam Jets 1973/88 ! Loved it !
Been there, done that, class 71-07
Looks like Sugar parking at Guam! And the pilots hair Oh my goodness! and 169 VROT😱
Wow this is super old school! Nav and an INS!!!
Ahhh the steam guages and nomex!! classic Air Force!
What year was this. I was at Fairchild 85-89
Very cool!
Wow, you can that video is old. The C-141 hasn't been flown in years, and the 135 tanker has the older style engines that, again, hasn't been used in years. But still, I would love to visit Wake Island!
Not the best cockpit intercom discipline. The Nav would have busted a check ride for missed and confusing calls even before level off. Safety of flight issues.
that's freedom punching a hole in the air---39.8 yrs in working those jets as a crew chief love water burners
This landing method was removed from training after a student and instructor were killed. Just before touchdown the trailing aircraft yawed slightly towards the lead aircraft. The student corrected the yaw with pedal input, which in the T-38 can cause a roll. It did in fact cause a sudden roll and the T-38 inverted shortly before touchdown. The aircraft crashed while inverted, killing both souls on board.
I know the CP and Nav. Pulled alert and flew with both of them. Thanks for sharing, brings back a lot of happy memories.
